A car-free village at the foot of 41 slopes in Kuusamo, just south of Lapland, with Oulanka National Park 30 km away.
Cars stay in the underground parking hall for 320 cars. The SkiBus, the airport bus and the trail bus stop at the turning circle on the southern edge of the village, and the Village-2-Valley gondola runs from the village to Ruka Valley.
Finland’s most popular hiking trail starts and ends at Saarua in East Ruka, where parking is free. It runs through Oulanka National Park and is walked from the end of May to October; in winter the trail is not safe to use.
Founded in 1956, 286 km² and 30 km from Ruka. With 187,400 visits in 2024 it is the busiest of the national parks around Kuusamo.
In Riisitunturi National Park, 30 km from Ruka, snow and rime build up on the spruces from October at the latest. An open wilderness hut stands on top of the fell; there is no public transport to the park.
The resort names Juhannuskallio, which you can reach by car, and the Valtavaara and Konttainen area. From August to November, lake and pond shores around Kuusamo can show the aurora twice: in the sky and on the water.
Four lifts serve Ruka Bike Park, and the area has 300 km of hiking routes and 180 km of mountain-bike routes. In Kuusamo the midnight sun lasts from mid-June to the end of the month.
